Ingredients and tools needed for making scented candles at home:

Similar to cooking, to make scented candles successfully, 70% depends on the preparation of ingredients. Make sure you have the following items

Candle containers

Different-sized containers can hold different amounts of wax. Larger containers can hold more wax, require more essential oils, have longer burning times, and release a stronger fragrance compared to smaller containers. Containers designed specifically for making handmade candles usually indicate the appropriate amount of wax, which is convenient for the following steps. However, if you decide to use existing containers at home, pay attention to the following points:

  • The candle container should be made of heat-resistant materials, such as glass with sufficient thickness, enamel-coated ceramics, or metal tins. Choosing such containers will prevent them from cracking when pouring hot wax or due to the heat emitted when burning the candle.
  • Avoid containers with a smaller mouth than the base, as this may affect the candle's fragrance distribution. Ideally, a cylindrical container with a uniform mouth and base is best, and it's recommended to have a lid to prevent the scent from dissipating or dust from sticking to the candle.

Candle wax

There are various types of candle wax available, such as soy wax, beeswax, palm wax, paraffin wax, gel wax, etc. Each type has its own characteristics, and the quality of the candle will vary depending on the supplier, even if they have the same name. Pay attention to the following characteristics when choosing the right wax for making scented candles:

  • The wax should be made from natural ingredients.
  • It should not emit black smoke.
  • It should not contain heavy metals inside the wax.
Choosing good-quality wax will result in a smooth surface, high hardness, good adhesion to the container, high fragrance retention, no black smoke, and beautiful color, ensuring the aesthetic appearance of the candle container.
Candlewick:

There are two common types of wicks for making candles at home: wooden wicks and cotton wicks. Wooden wicks are highly appreciated for their aesthetics and produce a crackling sound similar to a campfire when burning. However, their downside is that they are a bit challenging to ignite. Cotton wicks are made by braiding multiple cotton fibers together. The advantages of this type of wick are its low cost, easy ignition, and stable flame.

Essential oils:

Choosing the right essential oils is the most exciting step in the process of making handmade candles. To ensure the best quality for your candle, you should use pure essential oils with high concentration. Avoid using diluted essential oils, room fragrances diluted with solvents, or diluted fragrance oils, as they may prevent the candle from solidifying properly. The appropriate ratio of essential oils to wax is about 6-10% of the total wax weight. For example, if you want to make a scented candle with a total weight of 100g, you should use 6-10 ml of essential oil. If you want a stronger scent, you can use 8-10ml of essential oil.

Tools needed:
  • Small scale

  • Candle container

  • Thermometer

Detailed steps to make handmade scented candles:

Step 1: Clean the candle container - wipe off dust and remove any old candle wax to prepare for the new scented candle.

Step 2: Prepare the candle wick - for wooden wicks, you may need to trim and secure them to the base. For cotton wicks, measure the height of the candle container, cut a piece of wick accordingly, and attach it to the base securely.

Step 3: Melt the wax using the double-boiler method - place a sufficient amount of wax into the candle container and put it in a pot of water on the stove. Use a thermometer to check the temperature, and be cautious not to heat the wax above 95°C to prevent the wax from turning yellow when solidifying.

Step 4: Add color to the candle container - once the wax is completely melted, add the desired color to the wax and stir until it's evenly mixed.

Step 5: Add essential oils to the melted wax - weigh the wax using a small scale and add the appropriate amount of essential oil according to the formula shared earlier. Stir gently for 1-2 minutes to ensure the oil is fully blended with the wax.

Step 6: Pour the wax into the candle container and decorate - when the temperature of the melted wax reaches around 60°C, pour the wax slowly into the candle container until it is full. After the wax has solidified, you can use dried flowers to decorate the candle.

Finally, wait for 1-2 days for the candle to completely dry before trimming the wick to the appropriate length.

Safety tips for using scented candles:

  • Burn the candle for at least 1-2 hours each time or until the surface of the candle is completely melted to avoid tunneling.
  • Always trim the wick before lighting the candle, leaving about 0.2-0.3 cm from the surface of the candle to prevent black smoke.
  • Place the candle on a flat, wind-free surface, and remember to extinguish the candle before going to bed.
