1. Description
Alpha Arbutin is a new type of hydroquinone glucoside with an α-glucosyl bond. Alpha-arbutin is a skin beautifying and whitening agent which can effectively and selectively inhibit tyrosinase activity, therefore eliminate the formation of melanin and hyperpigmentation without altering the normal growth of the epidermic cell or inhibiting the expressing of tyrosinase itself. Alpha-arbutin involved process neither produce hydroquinone, nor have other side effects including toxicity, imitation and sensitization of skin. As a skin lightening agent, it has higher stability than hydroquinone, and nevertheless, is decomposed into hydroquinone and glucose rapidly in the presence of the enzyme hydrolase in the skin and exhibits the remedying effect to melanosis. It can infiltrate into the skin quickly without affecting the concentration of cell multiplication while reducing the deposition of skin pigment and removing color spots and freckles. Alpha-arbutin causes no irritation, scarce sensitization, it helps disinfect and moisturize the skin and eliminate inflammation, which permits continuous use for a long period of time in high concentration to develop satisfactory skin lightening effects. Alpha-arbutin shows much higher skin lightening effects at the same level as of hydroquinone which promises a better lightening performance at a lower dosage. Whitening effect, anti-aging effect and UVB/UVC filter are three main properties given by Alpha-arbutin, so it can be used to whiten the skin, to prevent liver spots and freckles, to treat sunburn marks and to regulate melanogenesis.

4. MechanismofMelanogenesisInhibition
The enzyme tyrosinase, one of the key enzymes involved in melanin synthesis, is activated in melanocyte by the stimulation of free radicals induced from UV irradiation and stress. Its activation triggers melanogenesis, a complex series of enzymatic and chemical reactions, and finally leads to the formation of freckles and suntan. The inhibitory effect of α-Arbutin on melanogenesis is thought to be due to direct inhibition of melanosomal tyrosinase activity.
