1. Description

Retinol is also known as Vitamin A
Sevaral retinoid form are used in cosmetic and medical applications applied to the skin. * Retinol is a weaker, over the counter version of retinoic acid.
* Tretinoin, all-trans retinoic acid (Retin-A).
* Isotretinoin (Accutane)
* Retinyl Palmiate (Vitamin A palmitate).

Retinol is a highly effective topical vitamin A treatment, a potent antioxidant promoting cellular turnover and epidermal renewal. It’s useful for treating and eliminating the wide range of skin aging and pigmentation conditions. It’s essentially one of the best anti-aging ingredients for maintaining youthful skin.

2. Composition

Inci name:

Silica (and) PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate (and) Retinol (and) Polysorbate 20 (and), Polyethylenimine (and) BHT (and) BHA (and) Lauryl Laurate (and) Zea Mays (Corn) Starch (and) Hydrolyzed Corn Starch (and) Hydrolyzed Corn Starch Octenylsuccinate

3. The Benefits of Encapsulation:

The challenge with retinol is that it is extremely unstable and easily degrades when exposed to light and air and it can irritate the skin.
Encapsulation makes it suitable for consumers with sensitive skin. Slow release minimizes the side effects associated with retinol (irritation, erythema or dermatitis).

Easy to formulate by improving the compatibility and distribution of retinol in typical lotions used in skin care.
Enhances stability by maximizing the potency and effectiveness of retinol due to retaining the retinol potency in the lotion over storage time.

4. Microsphere Delivery System

  • MultiSal Retinol® is a proprietary technology enhances retinol’s anti-aging benefits by stabilizing and modulating its dermal transportation and distribution for the best therapy outcomes. When the topical application such as lotion is rubbed onto the skin, encapsulated retinol is freed from within the microsphere and the submicron spheres containing the active retinol slowly release it over time. Encapsulated retinol penetrates the skin gradually with minimum exposure to air that tend to oxidize it. Resulting with more retinol bioavailable in the skin and overall making this product more effective.
  • Retinol is encapsulated in a proprietary microsphere technology, MultiSal®. The technology turns the liquid raw retinol into solid microspheres. MultiSal Retinol technology is a time-release technology that improves retinol’s stability by protecting it from degradation due to exposure to water, light and air. The time-release property slowly exposes retinol onto skin over several hours compared to free retinol which is exposed all at once. The slow release results in reduced irritant reactions to retinol’s side effects.
  • MultiSal® Retinol technology uses natural ingredients to encapsulate retinol. The process is conducted under room temperature with minimal exposure to water, heat and under the conditions required to protect retinol from oxidation. The outcome is fine particles that are easily incorporated into formulations of smooth lotions. The microspheres don’t leave any gritty effect when applied onto the skin.

7. Mechanism of Action

The cellular mechanism of retinoid action.

  • Step 1: Retinol interacts with specific protein called retinol-binding proteins (RBP), which aid intracellular transfer via the receptor protein, binding with CRBP (cellular retinol-binding proteins) in the cytoplasm.
  • Step 2: The retinol is metabolized into retinaldehyde (Rh), then metabolized into retinoic acid (RA).
  • Step 3: In the cytoplasm, RA is bound by CRABP (cellular RA-binding protein).
  • Step 4: RA enters the necleus and binds to the RA receptors (RARs) and and bind to a sequence of DNA known as RARE (RA-response element), which activates the transcription of target anti- aging genes.
